Lazar Bear Productions is proud to present "An Evening With" Taj Mahal Hula Blues. The Legendary Taj Mahal and his Hula Blues Band are coming to Hawaii to play four shows in April. Special Guest TBA. A portion of the proceeds to benefit the Describe legendary musician Taj Mahal in a single word or phrase? Impossible. You could call him a singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, ethnomusicologist, two-time Grammy-winner, world-class musical collaborator, musicians’ advocate, world traveler, fisherman, or cigar aficionado. These titles are all accurate, yet none convey the warmth, humor, and soulfulness of Taj and his music. Taj has been playing his own distinctive brand of music — variously described as Afro-Caribbean blues, folk-world-blues, hula blues, folk-funk, and a host of other hyphenations — for more than 40 years. Caribbean, Hawaiian, African, Latin, and Cuban sounds and rhythms mix with folk, jazz, zydeco, gospel, rock, pop, soul, and R&B, all layered on top of a solid country blues foundation. What ties it all together is Taj’s abiding interest in musical discovery, particularly in tracing many American musical forms back to their roots in Africa and Europe. Following his passion, Taj has spent time in the Caribbean, West Africa, Hawaii, Europe, the South Pacific, Australia, South America, and all over the continental U.S. His music reflects his global perspective, incorporating sounds from everywhere he’s lived and traveled. A self-taught musician, Taj plays more than 20 instruments, including the National Steel and Dobro guitars. His remarkable voice ranges from gruff and gravelly to smooth and sultry. The Hula Blues Band A self-taught musician, Taj plays more than 20 instruments, including the National Steel and Dobro guitars. His remarkable voice ranges from gruff and gravelly to smooth and sultry. His family is from the Carribean…Saint Kitts. That music has influenced his greatly. When he moved to Hawaii in 1981, the sound of that Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar really sent him spinning and brought him right back to the is-lands… Result? … more music. That and fishin’. The Hula Blues Band came together when Taj moved to Kaua`i, Hawai`i back in ‘81. Fishin’ with the guys and jammin’, enjoying life. We eventually got together and did a few shows. First with Napali (Carlos Andrade, Patrick Cockett, Pancho Graham, Fred Lunt) on "A Prairie Home Companion," and eventually with the rest of the band on Mau`i and O`ahu. Our first road trip (albeit a short one) was on the Ultimate Rythmn and Blues Cruise down in the Carribean to the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Grand Bahama Island. We played a few more times and in 1997, recorded the album - "Taj Mahal and the Hula Blues Band Sacred Island." on Kaua`i. It was originally released in Europe by Tradtion & Moderne under the title - "Taj Mahal and the Hula Blues" The Hula Blues Band tours mostly during the summer for about 2 months at a time. The past several years has brought us to across the United States, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Austria, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia, Australlia, the Carribean, and of course Hawaii. Spreading the word through music, the Hula Blues Band is here to stay.
